If you have ever typed "UV DTF vs DTF" into a search bar, you are probably standing in front of a tumbler, a t-shirt and a design you want to put on both. The two transfers share three letters and almost nothing else. This guide explains what each one is, where it sticks, how it is applied and how long it lasts, so you can order the right sheet the first time.
What Is a DTF Transfer?
DTF stands for direct-to-film. Your design is printed in full color onto a clear PET film, a layer of white ink goes underneath it, and a hot-melt adhesive powder is cured onto the back. The result is a flexible transfer that you press onto a garment with heat. When the film cools and you peel it away, the design stays bonded to the fabric.
DTF works on cotton, polyester, 50/50 blends, tri-blends, canvas, nylon and fleece, on light and dark garments alike, with no weeding and no minimum quantity. That is why it has become the default method for small print shops, Etsy sellers, team shirts and church events. If you are new to it, start with our DTF transfers beginner's guide.
What Is a UV DTF Transfer?
UV DTF uses a different printer and a different ink. The design is printed with UV-cured ink onto a film, then laminated with a clear transfer layer on top. There is no hot-melt powder and no white-ink "underbase" in the usual sense; instead the print itself becomes a thin, glossy, slightly raised sticker.
You apply it by hand: peel the white backing, lay the design on a clean surface, rub it down, and peel away the clear top film. No heat press, no iron, no weeding. It bonds to glass, stainless steel tumblers, ceramic mugs, acrylic, wood, metal, plastic and leather. It does not bond to fabric; the adhesive is made for smooth, non-porous surfaces.

Can I Put UV DTF on a Shirt?
No. This is the most common mistake we see. UV DTF decals are rigid compared to fabric; they will crack when the shirt stretches and the adhesive will not survive a wash cycle. Use a standard DTF gang sheet for anything you wear.
Can I Put DTF on a Tumbler?
Also no. DTF needs heat and pressure against a flat, porous surface to bond. A curved steel tumbler gives it neither. Some people try it with a mug press on ceramic, but the result peels within days. For cups, glass and tumblers, use UV DTF stickers.
Which One Should a Small Business Order?
Most of our customers end up ordering both, because the same design sells on a shirt and on a cup. A few guidelines:
- Selling apparel only? Stick with DTF. Build a gang sheet so several designs share one sheet and one price. Our gang sheet vs single transfer post shows the math.
- Adding tumblers, mugs or car decals? Add a UV DTF sheet. Tumbler wraps, cup decals and small logos fit well on a 22×12 sheet, which starts at $12.99.
- Matching sets (shirt + tumbler for bachelorette parties, cheer teams, teacher gifts, family reunions) are the easiest way to raise your average order. Order the DTF and UV DTF versions of the same artwork and bundle them.
- No heat press yet? UV DTF needs nothing but your hands. For shirts you can have us print the finished garment instead: see custom t-shirts with no minimum.
How to Apply Each One
DTF (fabric)
- Pre-press the garment 3–5 seconds to remove moisture.
- Place the transfer ink-side down. Press at 300°F for 10–15 seconds with medium pressure.
- Let it cool (cold peel) or wait a few seconds (warm peel) and peel the film slowly.
- Cover with parchment and press again for 7–10 seconds.
Polyester and blends run cooler, 250–280°F. Full settings for heat presses, Cricut EasyPress and home irons are on our press instructions page.
UV DTF (hard surfaces)
- Clean the surface with alcohol so it is free of dust and oil.
- Peel away the white backing paper.
- Lay the design down and rub firmly from the center outward to push out air bubbles.
- Slowly peel away the clear top film at a low angle.
Let it sit 24 hours before the first wash for maximum bond.
File Requirements Are the Same
Both transfers print best from a PNG with a transparent background at 300 DPI. JPG, PDF, AI and PSD are accepted too. Upload once and you can place the same file in the DTF builder and the UV DTF builder. If you are not sure about sizing, our file requirements page covers it.
Turnaround and Shipping from Texas
Standard DTF orders placed by 10 AM CT ship the same business day. UV DTF sheets usually ship within 24 hours, occasionally the next business day during busy weeks. Both ship from Texas with free shipping on orders over $75.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is UV DTF the same as DTF?
No. DTF is a heat-applied transfer for fabric. UV DTF is a peel-and-stick decal cured with UV light for hard surfaces. They use different inks, different films and different application methods.
Do I need a heat press for UV DTF?
No. UV DTF is applied by hand with no heat at all.
Is UV DTF dishwasher safe?
Yes. UV DTF decals are water-resistant and dishwasher safe. Hand washing keeps them looking new for longer.
Which lasts longer?
Both are built for daily use. A correctly pressed DTF print survives 50+ washes; a UV DTF decal on a tumbler lasts for years with normal use. Durability problems almost always come from application (not enough heat or pressure for DTF, a dirty surface for UV DTF) rather than the transfer itself.
Can I order both on one sheet?
No. They are printed on different machines, so they are separate products: build your fabric designs in the DTF Gang Sheet Builder and your hard-surface designs in the UV DTF Sticker Builder. Both ship from Texas with no minimum order.
